Richard Wagner’s Beethoven (1870): A New Translation
Client: The Boydell Press
Specifications: Royal 8vo, 230pp cased, single colour inner
Work carried out: proofreading and copy-editing, author liaison, page design and make-up
With the German and English text presented on facing pages through the book, the main challenge of this project was to match page breaks between the two languages in the least intrusive fashion, especially given the variation in annotation between the two. Monotype Ehrhardt Pro was chosen for both body and display type to best evoke the typography of the nineteenth-century original, set generously as Wagner’s essay on Beethoven is quite a short text.
The author said: “I’d like to express my sincere thanks to you for the immense care and trouble you have taken with this far from straightforward project; in particular your skill in setting the German text in a form that is, I think, as close as possible to Wagner’s original and the first printing […] I’m also delighted with the typeface and the way the parallel translation appears on the page.”
